Peter Platzer, knew that he had seen this market trend before. Large, custom, overly-expensive, single-use technologies being replaced by something smaller, standardized, inexpensive and multi-use. Consider that the smart phones that we carry today in our pockets have about the same amount of computing power that mainframe computers had just a couple of decades ago (and your local coffee shop takes up less volume than they did). Space is moving in this direction with the advent of the CubeSat, a standard form factor satellite. A mere 12-months after the spark of an idea to do something with satellites, Peter and his team of non-traditional space engineers deployed the world’s first crowdfunded satellite — Ardusat (a portmanteau of Arduino and Satellite) was launched to serve an immediate need for hands-on STEM education, and to validate that rapid iteration could be applied to space.
